What are simvastatin tablets?
SIMVASTATIN (Zocor®) blocks the body's ability to make cholesterol. Zocor can help lower blood cholesterol for patients who are at risk of getting heart disease or a stroke. It is only for patients whose cholesterol level is not controlled by diet.
What medicines may interact with Zocor?
Do not take Zocor with any of the following:
• amprenavir• atazanavir
• lopinavir; ritonavir
• delavirdine
• nelfinavir
• grapefruit juice
• clarithromycin
• indinavir
• ritonavir
• ketoconazole
• erythromycin
• saquinavir
• nefazodone
• itraconazole
• red yeast rice
• mibefradil
Zocor may also interact with the following medications:
• alcohol• efavirenz
• barbiturates (examples: phenobarbital, butalbital, primidone)
• bosentan
• nicardipine
• warfarin
• danazol
• amiodarone
• rifampin, rifabutin, or rifapentine
• diltiazem
• carbamazepine
• fluconazole
• telithromycin
• medicine used to stop early pregnancy (mifepristone, RU-486)
• digoxin
• oxcarbazepine
• phenytoin
• medicines to lower cholesterol or triglycerides (examples: fenofibrate, gemfibrozil, niacin)
• St. John's Wort
• verapamil
• troleandomycin
• cyclosporine
• voriconazole
Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, including unprescripted medicines,herbal products ,or nutritional supplements . Also tell your doctor if you frequently take drinks with caffeine or alcohol,or if you smoke. These may affect the way Zocor works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What should my doctor be informed about before I take Zocor?
He needs to know whether you feel any of these conditions:
• an alcohol problem• an unusual or allergic reaction to simvastatin, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
• recent surgery
• infection
• breast-feeding
• low blood pressure
• muscle disorder or condition
• liver disease
• seizures (convulsions)
• any hormone disorder (such as diabetes, under-active thyroid)
• severe injury
• kidney disease
• pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• blood salt imbalance
How should Zocor be taken?
Take pills by mouth.Precisely follow the directions on the prescription form. Zocor can be taken with or without food. If it upsets your stomach it may help to take it a glass of warm water or milk. Take your doses according to your daily schedule. Do not take it more often than prescribed. Finish the full course prescribed by your doctor even if you think your condition gets better. Do not stop taking except your doctor say otherwise.
Contact your doctor concerning the use of this medicine by children. Special care may be needed.
If you miss a dose...
Take the forgotten dose as soon as you recollect. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and keep your regular schedule. Never try to "catch up" by doubling the dose!
What side effects may I feel during Zocor treatment?
Side effects that should immediately be reported to your prescriber or health care professional:
Rare or uncommon:
• yellowing of the skin or eyes• skin rash, itching
• muscle pain, tenderness, cramps, or weakness
• decreased urination, difficulty passing urine
• redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
• dark yellow or brown urine
• unusual tiredness or weakness
• fever
Side effects that do not require special medical attention (visit your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
• headache• constipation
• upset stomach, indigestion, gas, heartburn
What should I take into consideration during Zocor treatment?
Visit your doctor for regular checks on your progress. You may need to have blood tests drawn to make sure your liver is working properly.
Tell your prescriber or health care professional as soon as you can if you get any unexplained muscle pain, tenderness, or weakness, especially if you also have a fever and tiredness.
This medicine should not be used by women who are pregnant or breast-feeding. There is a potential for serious side effects to an unborn child or to an infant. Talk to your health care professional or pharmacist for more information.

What is the shelf life of the pills?
- The expiry date is mentioned on each blister. It is different for different batches. The shelf life is 2 years from the date of manufacture and would differ from batch to batch depending on when they were manufactured.
