What are Ultram tablets (Generic name -- Tramadol) ?
Ultram (Ultram®) is an analgesic that can relieve moderate to moderately severe pain following surgery such as cesarean section, hysterectomy, hip replacement or other bone surgery, and dental surgery. This drug also helps relieve chronic pain associated with cancer, nerve pain, or low-back pain.
What medicines may interact with Ultram?
• alcohol
• medicines for nausea or vomiting
• bupropion
• digoxin
• naloxone
• drugs to regulate heart rhythm such as amiodarone, propafenone, quinidine
• procarbazine
• seizure medicines
• isoniazid, INH
• linezolid
• antihistamines (commonly found in allergy or cold products)
• medicines called MAO inhibitors-phenelzine (Nardil®), tranylcypromine (Parnate®), isocarboxazid (Marplan®), selegiline (Eldepryl®)
• medicines for anxiety, depression, or sleeping problems
• droperidol
• medicines for Parkinson's disease such as entacapone, pramipexole, ropinirole or tolcapone
• St. John's wort
• muscle relaxants
• imatinib
• other medicines for pain such as codeine, morphine, nalbuphine, pentazocine, or propoxyphene
• cocaine
• furazolidone
• ritonavir
• medicines for mental problems like schizophrenia
• stimulants such as amphetamine or dextroamphetamine
• rifampin
• warfarin
Tell your doctor about all other medicines you are taking, including unprescripted medicines,herbal products ,or nutritional supplements . Also tell your doctor if you frequently take drinks with caffeine or alcohol,or if you smoke. These may affect the way Ultram works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
What should my doctor be informed about before I take Ultram?
He needs to know whether you feel any of these conditions:
• pregnant or trying to get pregnant
• head injury or brain tumor
• stomach or intestinal problems
• liver disease
• breathing difficulty
• seizures (convulsions) or seizure disorder (epilepsy)
• an alcohol or drug abuse problem
• an unusual or allergic reaction to tramadol, codeine, other pain medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
• kidney disease
• breast-feeding
How should Ultram be taken?
Take pills by mouth.Precisely follow the directions on the prescription form. Ultram can be taken with or without food. If it upsets your stomach it may help to take it a glass of warm water or milk. Take your doses according to your daily schedule. Do not take it more often than prescribed. Finish the full course prescribed by your doctor even if you think your condition gets better. Do not stop taking except your doctor say otherwise. Higher doses may cause severe side effects, do not take more medication than your prescriber has instructed.
Contact your doctor concerning the use of this medicine by children. Special care may be needed.
If you miss a dose...
Take the forgotten dose as soon as you recollect. However, if it is almost time for your next dose, skip the one you missed and keep your regular schedule. Never try to "catch up" by doubling the dose!
What side effects may I feel during Ultram treatment?
Side effects that should immediately be reported to your prescriber or health care professional:
Rare or uncommon:
• changes in vision
• skin rash, itching
• redness, blistering, peeling or loosening of the skin, including inside the mouth
• difficulty breathing, shortness of breath
• passing urine more frequently than usual, or not passing urine as often as usual
• fast or irregular heartbeat
• hallucinations (seeing and hearing things that are not really there)
• seizures (convulsions)
More common:
• nausea
• anxiety, agitation
• vomiting
Side effects that do not require special medical attention (visit your doctor if they continue or are bothersome):
• dizziness, drowsiness
• itching
• difficulty sleeping
• headache
• false sense of well being, feeling of unreality, mood changes
• constipation or diarrhea
• indigestion
• dry mouth
What should I take into consideration during Ultram treatment?
Tell your prescriber or health care professional if your pain does not go away. Visit your doctor for regular checks on your progress if you are taking Ultram regularly.
Do not drive, use machinery, or do anything that needs mental alertness until you know how tramadol affects you. Be careful taking other medicines which may also make you tired. This effect may be worse when taking these medicines with tramadol. Alcohol can increase possible drowsiness, dizziness, confusion and affect your breathing. Avoid alcohol while taking tramadol.
Tell your doctor or dentist that you take Ultram before you receive any medical or dental care, emergency care, or surgery.

Ultram can be stored at room temperature. Protect from small children and direct sunbeams.Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
