Sildenafil (Viagra) is indicated for the treatment of erectile dysfunction. Erection is mediated by the release of nitric oxide in the corpus cavernosum of the penis. A substance called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) leads to the degradation of cGMP. Sildenafil increases the availability of cGMP.
